Ok, let's have some feedback.

This was an interesting view of the early Tecton, although I believe cannon puts the split between Distect and Tecton at a slightly later time. The two were actually allies for a good generation after Unity, mostly likely because everyone involved in either one was too busy trying to keep the continent alive to sit down and debate philosophy.
I am still a bit puzzled about the tableau mentioned in the first letter, and why it was considered so scandalous. I expect that will be cleared up in the final letter(s), though.

According to the official chronology, the Battle of Leander Field, which crushed the Distect and
drove the remnants underground took place in the time period 10-15 AU. In 2 or 3 AU, Chanel was coerced into naming a Sectuib (rather than Sosectu) or lose its Tecton membership. Chanel
was a daughter House of Zeor, so this is pretty heavy stuff. It's hard to imagine it happening while Klyd was still alive.

Not sure which tableau came across as 'scandalous'. Yilli likes the mural of the Gulf trade fair. The one of Klyd confronting the Nivet Council isn't scandalous, but Yilli is trying to be funny by comparing herself facing the board to Klyd facing the Council.

If you can tell where I confused you about this, let me know and I'll try to fix it.

I'm wondering whether they will go over the paintings at some point and paint over Hugh's orange Rior cape in Zeor Blue. Later they might just have to paint him out altogether, or scrap the whole series and pretend it never happened. With maybe 15 million Kills at the Secret Pens in the first 10-12 years after Unity to hide, what's a little more historical revisionism?

Some Ancient historian said that there's nothing better to consolidate a revolution than an external war. Since the Tecton is in no position to stir up a war with Genland, they may have resorted to a civil war against the Distect.

According to the chronology in the Frevven stories, the Battle of Leander Field wasn't until 33 AU. That would seem to make more sense in light of all the other things happening in that period. ?.

I'd forgotten about the timing in the Frevven stories. I'm going by www.simegen.com/CHRONO1.html, which puts the famous battle in the period 10-15 AU. In the Bender Cove roleplaying, Muryin is still alive and active in 30 AU. I'm assuming she's still alive in 12 AU. Klyd and Hugh are dead, and have been for some time, the Tecton has a literal death grip on the laterals of every Sime, and perhaps 15 million Kills in the secret pens on its corporate conscience because of its unwillingness to consider direct Gen transfer to save the semijuncts, and at the same time, many or most of the pen gens. Almost all the semijuncts are dead, and the Pens are closed or about to close. Most of the population of Nivet is young and healthy, and the economy is booming. But all these optimistic young people were raised by a doomed generation of semijuncts, and the 'secret' of the pens is a secret known to everyone.

At any rate, while I agree that it makes more sense for the final battle and confrontation to take place later than 10-15 AU, my stuff still works if you assume that McCarthy-style Distect witch-hunting would have started well in advance of armed conflict. After all, they didn't actually do anything to Yilli but stress her out. Even if they established some Distect activity, there wouldn't have been much they could do at this point but (1) demand she stop (2) threaten to withdraw Tecton membership from Teiu (3) general harrassment, economic sanctions, etc. They've already coerced her into promising that Teiu will never have a Sosectu. She doesn't have very strong feelings about the Distect, she feels there are more important things to devote her energies to. She's well aware that there are limits to the number of uphill battles one can fight concurrently.

Letter 7 will be up soon, pending some more discussion with Kaas about one of her characters I'm using. There's quite a bit of other material backed up behind it pending my struggles with literary elements like voice, POV and other factors I don't have the tech terms for.

I find it strange that I'm writing sort of political SF, when I don't usually like reading it (or living it). Maybe it's different when I get to run things. :-)

I enjoyed the Frevven stories very much, and I hope I'll be able to do some of the emotionally moving stuff in here half as well. Frevven never really manages to come to terms with his past, and my characters are also trying to deal with what they had to do in terrible times and what those actions did to them.

I hope you've enjoyed reading what I've written.

Just FYI Jacqueline never did take the games seriously and I think she threw all canon to the wind for that one appearance as Muryin. I think there is a chronology showing which Farris was Zeor's Sectuib when though... somewhere....

I just went over and looked at the official choronology, and I don't see anything about Leander field there at all. ????
I do know that there's an error exactly there, because it shows 'The Only Good Sime' (in which Frevven is 21) coming BEFORE 'Controller's Dilemma' (in which he was 11 or 12...in First Year).
Correlating all the date-related info in the stories--that's why they call me Kaires the Korrelator--Frevven had to have been born in the same year as the Unity Treaty...and Leander Field had to have happened in Year 33 AU.

I've seen a partial list of the succession in Zeor, but it didn't have any dates. (It's in the 2nd of 3 sets of letters called 'Muryin Farris -- Groupie?')

This is the other reason I don't write in canon! :} Not because I can't, but because I know I goof chronology on a regular basis. I've just gone through and read most of my own stories. Owie! Oh well, that's why they call this practice, right?

Anyways, I, personally, don't worry about it much, but I tend to think that most readers don't either, at least not in the process of reading the stories or letters and such as you have here.

I thought the succession went, at least around unity, from Klyd, to Muryin, to Hilo and then I don't remember where. But it was only a generation or two to Digen and then Ercy. There really isn't a whole lot of time through all of this.

Also, one thing to note, is that unless you have better transportation/communcations than animal traction, you could be off by as much as half a dozen years, easily, on when things happened, even fairly shortly afterward. If nothing else because calendars and suchlike have a tendency to get fuzzy without such niceties as telephones, faxes and such things.

I can deduce a little more detail about the chronology from non-canonical sources (which may or may not be worth the ether it's embossed on):

- Klyd was 34 at the time of House of Zeor
- that was 21 years after his changeover, so he changed over at age 13
- that was 15 years before Zelerod's Doom, so he was 49 then, 52 when he disappeared

- Muryin was born 3 or 4 years after HoZ
- that means she was 13 at changeover, same as her dad...and became Sectuib at 16
- if Leander Field was in year 33, she was 46 then

- I haven't a shred of data to pin Hilo to, because I haven't seen anything about his life, canonical or otherwise
- all that's certain is that he was Digen's grandfather

I'm not sure dates could get that far off in a low-tech society:
- farmers always know what 'month' they are in by the zodiac, and that hasn't changed for millenia
- 'Year's Turning' is their biggest holiday, so they know when that is, too
- itinerant criers pass news, big and little, as they travel around...and Leander Field was big news just about everywhere

...I want letter 7, too. Letters are a marvelous way to tell stories. (Look at 'Dracula')

It's over in the far far right column. The table doesn't wrap.

The table has its problems. Some parts apply to ranges of years rather than individual years. There's a column for that, but it can be confusing.

The Authors are a bit cagy about details, which is a good thing - they can be more flexible in future writing that way.

If you'd like to share your chronology and calculations with me, I'd like to see them. Or you could post them to this board or the SG list. I can't seem to get people to pick things up and run with them on the SG list, but you may have better luck.

He's Tonyo Logan's son, and he was conceived while Zhag was still alive. I think Zhag survived until something like 12 or 15 AU. There may be more info in the SG list archives. Handwaving, I'd say he was born around 5-10 AU. You could ask Jean. I got all this from the SG list archives.

Via his son, Orim, Digen's father. According to UZF, he was reckless enough to beget Orim on another Farris.

I agree, especially after Unity. They soon acquired the telegraph, so you could communicate with most people within Nivet in a day or so, and News would travel fast. Even without telegraphy, a person in good shape, on good roads in good weather can walk 50 miles (80 km) per day, and horse couriers (pony express) that can change horses frequently can carry information considerable distances quite rapidly. As a monolithic bureaucracy, the Tecton needs good communications.

It also needs a postal service, or some kind of reliable system of the kind or my epistolary form is sunk. ;-)

Ok, you got it. I've really enjoyed writing these letters myself. The next section is mostly in the form of dialog, but there is a 'last letter from Capital' which is the first part of the Journey Across North Nivet. This particular chunk is holding back all the stuff behind it because I've got a lot of material in it which my hired critic (he criticises in exchange for getting more of my prose to read) tells me totally destroys the illusion of a letter, but it's good stuff and I should keep it. So I'm trying to figure out how to rework it.

I want to thank you people for giving me feedback, and invite you to post more. I've got a day job, so I'm just writing for fun. It's gratifying to know that people are actually reading it and want more.

The more I see of Yilli, the more I just plain like her! This material makes me think something I've thought before--if only people back then had listened more to Risa and Hugh and less to that insufferable Klyd Farris. Of course, as someone pointed out recently on the list--I think it was Jean Lorrah--if they had, people in the post-Unity universe might have led happy, boring lives with little potential for dramatic story-telling ;-)

Are you sure Yilli is a Tecton Sime? I haven’t heard that much common sense exit a Tecton Sime’s mouth before. Ah, then there once was a time, after the Tecton came to power, when sense was possible if not common. However the die was already cast (in more ways than one).

I am truly enjoying this series of letters!! I’m just sorry that I am not able to spend the amount of time I once had in reading. Real Life has reared it’s ugly head and I am currently trying to bludgeon the monster back into submission. Unfortunately it is winning and I am not!

Jori sounds like an absolute delight. Yilli reminds me of a certain Sosectu I know. Too bad they never ran into each other Elyn would have liked her instantly! Thanks for the wonderful insights into a time when there was hope even if it was shot down fairly early on.

That reminds me: have any of Hugh's writings showed up anywhere? apparently he was quite a writer, and lots of folk appreciated his point of view. I'd sure like to read some of his stuff.

And don't forget all the grief he had to deal with: his parents, brother, sister, two wives, two children, and his beloved grandfather had all died violently.

Well, he had his day. And although he did't do anything politically impressive, it sounds like people really liked him.

Tony went to Norlea, where he met Zhag, very soon after Unity. The story 'Reflection of a Dream' takes place 15 years later. Zhag was very much alive then.

That's the last of the Z&T stories chronologically, so I don't know how much longer Zhag lived.

Actually, Yilli is an almost-destroyed-by-the-Tecton Sime, as will come out later. She's now an able-to-compromise-with-the-Tecton Sime and a usually-able-to-stay-out-of-the-Tecton's-silage-chopper Sime.

But he killed those women himself, as Yilli and Roza's granda the Sectuib would have said in his earthy manner, with his 13th tentacle.

If I can ever get the conversations I'm writing steered into it, you'll read the Sat'htine Farrises opinions on Klyd and Hugh. It's almost as bad as real life the way my characters will not stay on topic. I used to think writers made this stuff up about characters taking on a life of their own!

I knew I was doing something right when I found that I couldn't bear to re-read the excerpt from the Opening Remarks. I find those things unbearable in real life too.

Re: 13th tentacle.
First off, I sure would like to meet Granda. I've seen several quotes attributed to him--that's the most hilarious, though--and I like his mind!

But I gotta set the record straight about poor, malandered--that's halfway between maligned and slandered--Klyd in that regard:
- his first wife died in a raid, trying to protect their two children...the same raid in which 'Grandfather' was so badly injured that Klyd had to take over as Sectuib.
- while it's true that his second wife died in childbirth, he probably could have saved her if he had been in Zeor at the time...you will recall, he was 'detained' elsewhere
- and it's my humble opinion that Aisha would not have died giving birth to Muryin if she'd had proper Householding training (more on that if you're interested)

Should we take this chronology and 'personality' stuff into another discussion heap? I'm fascinated by it myself, but I imagine some of the 'Letters From Capital' fans could well do without it.

I knew it! Yilli has entirely too much common sense to be toeing the Tecton party line. Sorry she had to acquire it through escaping the teeth of the beast though. Well, she's smarter 'en they are now. She just seems to keep hoping to find intelligence in a bureaucracy, talk about an oxymoron.

By the way, I must have missed something along the way (not unheard of), what does the "P" stand for Poop-for-Brains Farris? I'm not familiar with that branch of the Farris family pecan tree.

I'm working my way slowly through several stories at once but I am really loving Yilli's missives.

Eileen, I had read This Day but didn't remember the name of the protagonist. There certainly is a lot of great stuff on this site, your own Mog among it. THe material here is a lot less ummm formulaic than the stuff on the Other Site.

Trin Oren is a resurrected House, like Teiu, so I suppose Jocelyn's Sosectu could meet my Sectuib. They would be in the same time period, unless I'm confused. When I was first thinking about the whole thing I came up with the image of a storm-broken tree regrowing from its roots, and that image appears in the first thing I wrote about Yilli et al, which I haven't figured out yet how to get into the scrapbook without giving too much or too little away. Then I read through the Householding Register and found that Trin Oren (Jocelyn) used the same image.

Jocelyn - the P is for Perrin, apparently a popular name among the Sat'htine Farrises. Nobody else here knows this yet. When you meet the egregious Uncle Zeth Farris a few chapters down the line, he will give you his view of the events in letters 6 and 7, and a bit about Hajene P, as well as some opinions and attitudes none of us will like.

Hi Bae,

The tree symbol is so very basic it's almost like racial memory. Trin Oren's symbol, well the one they admit to in public anyway, is sunlight pouring through storm clouds. Oren, which is the destroyed House from which Trin Oren got its first channel had the gnarled oak as a symbol. So I cannot and would not claim the broken tree symbol.

I'll let you in on a little secret, Trin Oren's true symbol is the Phoenix Blossom. Email me and I'll give you a link to the image.

I really like Yilli's sense of humor, and particularly her refusal to stand on her dignity. It sounds like she's going to get into trouble, though, if she keeps on doing the burn-training of her missionaries so frequently. It's too bad she's not working with a Farris: one thing that they _do_ accomplish well, is pull new techniques out of the hat when it's required to save the day.

Actually, if the problem reaches its logical conclusion, she'll end up in much the same position as Rital is, by the end of the new novel (80,000 words and about 2/3 done). Although Rital got there by another path, and much against his will.

I'm glad you are enjoying Yilli.

As far as getting into trouble with burn-training, she is and she isn't. She's avoiding trouble with the Tecton by pledging the missionaries into Teiu, which gives her rights over them that the Tecton has not yet taken away from the Householdings. She also has them formally qualified as TN-3s by Tecton channels to avoid any question that their qualifications are genuine.

She does a lot of training by 'simulated transfer' a technique later reinvented or rediscovered by Wise Snake Farris. Yilli sometimes calls it 'simulated transfer with real slilbliss'. At any rate, all of this is being done with her secondary system, in channel's functional mode, so she doesn't risk any loss of control or potential for juncting herself, even technically. Psychologically and emotionally, she finds this phase of training extremely stressful, and is looking for alternatives. There's a bit about this in the second section of Journey Across North Nivet.

As far as finding a Farris to pull a better way out of the hat for her, she's always willing to share her techniques and has often tried to get the Tecton interested in working with her, to no avail. The things she's been doing, first trying to save semijuncts with direct Gen transfer and later, training TN-3s to serve multiple transfers per month to renSimes, are not at all the sorts of thing the Tecton is interested in. She rants at some length about this in the interviews for the ZMI sealed archives (not yet posted).

Hj P Farris in Letter 6 was actually supposed to be merely eccentric, and actively helpful, but somehow the story got away from me. Yilli does have Skyepar ambrov Sat'htine to consult with. He's what the snobs would call a 'failed Farris', the non-Farris son of the Farris Sectuib in Sat'htine. He's a very good channel, benefiting from all the channel-enhancing genes bred into his line over the centuries, even if he isn't a genetic Farris, and has had an excellent education at Rialite and at home.

Oh boy!!! Where to start?!

It seems Yilli is a Finder. It's a real talent. I don't mean a finder of lost car keys but a Finder of Needful Things. She found a way to save hundred – thousands of kids in Gen Territory just by being willing to teach Gen "Missionaries" how to give transfer and not get killed. And she didn't have to suck up to some Farris to do it. Although some seem to think that if it didn't fall like pearls from the lateral orifices of a Farris it couldn't possibly be an intelligent solution.

Yilli found a "Natural" Donor who was being wasted and ignored by the Tecton because he had no leanings toward Tecton social climbing which really is a the root (the social climbing not his lack of desire to do it) of the Donor "shortage". All he wanted to do was heal. I mean what sort of "idiot" just wants to help people – right?

As far as "diatribes" go the one you wrote doesn't qualify in my estimation. It merely states the facts of the matter. Janush really lucked out in having Yilli find him. He's a cute kid and will someday be an incredible man but only if he can manage to stay out of the clutches of the "Evil Empire" during his formative years. I think Yilli and Skyepar have managed to assure that he will.

I like Skyepar but his upbringing shows. He may not be a "Farris" but he certainly has the high handedness down pat. "Yilli, the water's boiling, make some trin." LOL!!! And he had the nerve to be embarrassed by his "Uncle". The nut never falls far from the tree. It looks like the only thing that saved him is the fact that he didn't get Farrised. Although Perrin and Wise Snake put the kibosh on my theory that the nuttiness was sex linked. It appears to be nose linked. Now how's that for a diatribe? ;o)

Okay, all kidding and silliness, on my part, aside. These letters and scenes are a wonderful look at a time in history that doesn't have any "official" definition. Your work and Kaas' are an excellent set of historical fill-in-the-blank-space pieces. Thank you so much for posting them!

So where is the rest of it?!?     8o)

As Sectuib, Yilli embodies the virtues and essence of her House. Teiu means 'gleanings' or 'salvage', something discarded that someone else can see the value of and use for. Notice that as soon as she hears from Skyepar that the Tecton is going to stop training disjunct channels, she is appalled at the waste and immediately thinks up uses for them.

The idea of training TN-3s to serve First Transfer in out-T areas where Sime Centers are sparse is one that the Tecton eventually implements - Laneff manages to kill one in the book Rensime. In the ZMI interviews, Yilli rails against the Tecton for not doing it already, pointing out that they have a lot more resources than she does, and she has far more volunteers than she can train. I suspect that the Tecton is unwilling to get into this for several reasons - one is that it has a Distect smell about it, and the other is that it's hard for these people to accept the idea of a Gen working independently, without a channel's supervision. The same people who arranged the deaths of millions of secret pen Gens are quite worried about the accidental kill of a trained volunteer.

Skyepar's ordering Yilli around is meant as affectionate teasing. She would never put up with it if he were serious. Skyepar has his problems. He could deal with his mother if she were just his mother, but she's his Sectuib, and he is in some ways a traditional Householder with deep feudal loyalty to the House and Sectuib to whom he has pledged. He has stood up to her in some ways, which will come out later.

Yilli isn't anti-Farris, but she's found that it's usually safest to stay out of their way. They aren't very interested in her, so that hasn't been too difficult, except in a few very exceptional cases. Farrises are aristocrats, and despite reestablishing Teiu with herself as Sectuib, Yilli is still something of a gutter rat to members of more established Hosueholdings. Yilli respects the channeling skills of Farrises, but she can't afford to bring the mutation into her House.

It would be great if the Authors picked up some of the ideas Kaas and I have come up with for this time period. I've got to get some more Zhag and Tonyo music into here somewhere!

Jocelyn, one more comment. I personally like the idea of scattering TN-3s around Genland to serve First Transfers, but it didn't seem like a project Yilli could manage herself. So I tried to think who could, and I came up with the Church of Unity. They may have started out as an in-T organization to help Simes who were raised in Church of the Purity out-T to cope, but after Unity, they would want to expand out-T. As Yilli remarks in her Konawa Agricultural Gazette interview, they can hardly preach God's message of Unity for Sime and Gen, but tell people that they will have to keep shooting their kids in changeover for a while yet, so they seem like the ideal people to run the whole out-T project, with Yilli providing the Donor training. They approached her after the Tecton expressed a strong disinterest, partly because she had a reputation as a dissenter, but mostly because she had a lot of experience training ordinary Gens as TN-3s in her project to try to save semijuncts. Canon says that most Gens can make TN-3, but few do. Yilli does the proof of concept. She can make a 'motivated' GN-1 into a TN-3 in about 3 months. Her methods are based on her rediscovery of Ancient psychology techniques, such as desensitization (used for treating phobias), but she doesn't know that.

And a few years after that she had a child by Jesse Dumas (UZF, chapter 17).

Of course, successful pregnancies are certainly possible at age 50 or so for Ancient women, but adding that into the existing risks of Farris pregnancies ....

I note that UZF doesn't say she survived, just that her child did.

Betsy, are we talking about the same text? Letters 6 and 7 are about the interview with the Farris and the hearing before the board of inquiry, complete with pratfalls into horseshit.

I assume you mean the two chapters of JNN, Terrible Times, Parts I and II. They were hard to write. It was hard to get the emotional tone and the interaction between Yilli and Janush right. It was hard to treat the material in a way that conveyed the effect on the participants without either being appealing to sadists or trivializing real life events that have been at least as horrific and with less rationalization. I held those chapters back for nearly two months while I dithered over them.

I'm really glad you think I succeeded. It's so hard to tell whether I'm achieving the effect I'm trying for if I don't get feedback.

The main theme of the book is how people can survive incredible horrors, and years later be found living apparently normal lives. It isn't until you know them well that you can see the long term effects of their experiences on their personalities and actions. Our real world is full of such people, they are all around us, and it's a tribute to the human spirit that what happened to them not readily apparent in daily life.
